Book Review - A Town Called Valentine by Emma Cane

It is always fun to get in right at the start of a series, and when the series looks as promising as Emma Cane's new "Valentine Valley" one, with her first book, "A Town Called Valentine," - well, let's just say the fun is just beginning!

As a former resident of the wonderful state of Colorado, I was reading this novel closely, to see if the author got the details and nuances right, and I'm proud to report that Emma Cane does the Rocky Mountain state justice! Her fictional town of "Valentine," could be one of many little mountain towns that my family and I used to explore in the region and it brought back wonderful memories just reading this story!

Emma starts out her series with an introduction to her personable cast of characters, including the Thalberg family with their charming matriarch and handsome sons, and the business-owners that populate the town and are so essential to this tale. But my favorite character was Emily Murphy, the lost soul with a broken heart who finds friendship and love in the tiny community that takes her in like one of their own.

With friendship and romance key components to this series, I can't wait to see what fun Emma Cane has lined up for future books. I know I'll be on the outlook for them!

About The Author:

Emma Cane was born in Erie, a small Pennsylvania town on beautiful Lake Erie, where the sunsets are some of the best in the world. Though Emma enjoyed figure skating and skiing (good sports in the northeast), she brought a book everywhere she went, usually science fiction and fantasy. In high school she discovered historical romances, starting with Kathleen Woodiwiss’s Shanna, and Emma never looked back. The first romance she ever tried to write was a historical Western, but now she’s changed to the 21^st century, where cowboys can ride pickup trucks as well as horses. Emma fell in love with small-town, heartwarming stories, and created the fictional town Valentine Valley, a small ranching community in the Colorado Rockies, where she sets her novels. A Town Called Valentine is the first in her new series.

Now that her three children are grown, Emma loves spending time crocheting and singing (although not necessarily at the same time), and hiking and snowshoeing alongside her husband Jim and two rambunctious dogs Uma and Apollo.

Book Review: Almost A Hometown Bride by Helen R. Myers

As a book reviewer for nearly 16 years now, I've been privileged to get to know quite a few authors, and I'm proud to call many of them friends. Helen Myers is one of those special people - she's an incredible author, a constant encourager, and a lady I'm so pleased to know as a friend.

Helen's latest book, "Almost A Hometown Bride," is wonderful example of Helen's creative and heart-warming writing style.

When man-shy Merritt Miller impulsively disembarked a bus in Almost, Montana, all she hoped for was to have found a safe place to stay, and to forget the misery she'd left behind back east. She yearned to learn what a day without fear was like. But the instant Cain Paxton entered her life, not even her well-honed defenses seemed to do her much good. Cain was everything she needed to stay away from in a man--strong, oblivious to what others thought or said about him, and hungry enough to even want her.

Cain knew all the reasons he should leave Merritt alone--she had suffered at the hands of a man and was probably damaged for life. Add that he was fresh out of prison and had nothing to offer her, it was kinder to be cruel. But needs sabotaged him. He yearned for the life that had been deprived him, and he was starving for Merritt's sweet touch, the chance at real love. All the pragmatism in the world wasn't strong enough to repress such a deep-seated craving.

The story in "Amost A Hometown Bride" really touched my heart. The main character, Merritt, has not only the problems of being shy and untrusting, but she also has to deal with a disability, a hip injury that causes her much pain and a limp that she despises, but she is strong enough to overcome and deal with her handicap, and she does so with dignity and grace.

Cain, the man Merritt becomes involved with, overlooks her obvious difficulties, and has the sense to offer help when she needs it, and to keep to himself when he sees that she is determined to do things on her own. It takes a special man to understand how to do that, and Helen captures that essence in this character brilliantly.

I enjoyed the setting of the pictureque small town of Almost, Montana and I hope that there will be future stories revolving around the unique folks who inhabit the village.

Helen has once again done a bang-up job with this novel. I urge anyone who has never picked up a Helen R. Myers novel to do so - you will be so glad you did!

Book Review - The Summer Garden: A Chesapeake Shores Novel by Sherryl Woods

I enjoy reading "series" novels, and Sherryl Woods' Chesapeake Shores books are among my favorites. So, it is with a bit of sadness that I review "The Summer Garden," the final book in this wonderful series.

About The Book:

Falling for "Maddening Moira" O'Malley was the unexpected highlight of Luke O'Brien's Dublin holiday. So when she pays a surprise visit to Chesapeake Shores, Luke is thrilledat first. A fling with this wild Irish rose is one thing, but forever? Maybe someday, but not when he's totally focused on establishing a business that will prove his mettle to his overachieving family.

Given Luke's reaction, Moira has some soul-searching of her own to do. Scarred by her father's abandonment, she wonders if Luke, with his playboy past, is truly the family man she longs for. Adding to her dilemma, she's offered an amazing chance at a dream career of her own.

Deep down, though, Moira knows home is the real prize, and that love can be every bit as enchanted as a summer garden.

I love the big, rambunctious Irish family of the O'Briens - they are close-knit, in each other's business, and most of all, loving! So Sherryl's story here wraps up all the loose ends of the children and grandchildren of Nell O'Brien, the beloved matriarch who finds a little love of her own in the end.

Luke and Moira's story is fresh, and charming, and a bit frustrating at times. I wanted to reach through the pages at some points and whack them both for not knowing what a great love they both experience, but Sherryl does it for her readers and, well, let's just say - a happily-ever-after is guaranteed!

As I said, this book wraps up the main characters' stories in this series, but I'm happy to report that maybe, MAYBE, Sherryl might be persuaded to continue the tales of the grandkids in the future. (This is according to her latest letter at her website - http://www.sherrylwoods.com/) In the meantime, she has three new books coming up in her "Sweet Magnolias" series that I can't wait to read!

If you enjoy a lively, entralling, and totally captivating story, Sherryl Woods is the author for you! I highly recommend any of her work!

How Do You Reduce Mid-Life Weight Gain?

Weight gain during middle age is a common problem. One reason for this is that our metabolic rate slows about 10% per decade starting in our 30s. Therefore, if we continue habits of eating the same foods in the same portion sizes in our 50s as we did in our 20s, weight gain is likely to occur. Women face additional challenges at mid-life due to hormonal changes. Indeed, some doctors tell women to expect and accept a ten to twenty pound increase in weight during menopause.

However, mid-life weight gain is not inevitable nor is it impossible to lose. If our appetites are made to run in tandem with our actual need for food, our weight can remain stable as the years pass. It is possible to have our hunger be “in sync” with what our bodies really need (rather than with the eating patterns of youth) if we eat in a way that allows our weight-controlling hormones to function properly.

This eating plan stands in stark contrast to the conventional “calorie math” advice usually given about how to lose weight. It involves listening to our bodies rather than following the faulty assumptions and advice of the experts. (For more about listening to your body, see Food Allergy and Gluten-Free Weight Loss). Case in point: I am 58, post-menopausal, and I weigh what I did in my mid-20s. I have been following an eating pattern since that age which includes protein-containing between-meal snacks when I’m hungry. This pattern is a primitive version of the eating plan presented in Food Allergy and Gluten-Free Weight Loss. I didn’t do anything in addition to following this pattern during menopause and didn’t gain weight.

Conventional diets say that all that matters when you want to lose weight is the number of calories consumed minus the number burned by physical activity. Although calories do have an effect, they are not the primary determining factor in how much we weigh. Our hormones, such as insulin, cortisol, leptin and others, are what really determine our weight. If your hormones are saying, “Deposit that food! A famine is in the land!” you will not be able to lose weight even if the number of calories you consume is very low. Because they work against body chemistry, calorie-counting diets rarely result in permanent weight loss. After dieters reach their goal, they usually re-gain most or all of the weight they lost. They may even be heavier than when they started; if they lost muscle mass, their metabolic rate will be lower than before their diet. So rather than counting calories, if you want to lose weight at any age, you must understand and control your weight-related hormones.

Insulin is the hormone which is most important to the weight loss process because it regulates the activity of two enzymes that control fat metabolism. High insulin levels activate an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase. This enzyme catalyzes the production of triglycerides from any fatty acids (digested fat units in the form that is absorbed by the intestine) eaten in a meal. Thus, excess insulin promotes storage of any fat we eat by our fat cells rather than using it for fuel after our meal. In a person with normal insulin levels, any recently eaten fats could have been used for energy during the two hours after a meal. If insulin levels are high, dietary fat will be stored in the fat cells instead. In addition, high insulin levels in the blood inhibit the activity of the enzyme triglyceride lipase which breaks down stored fat for use as energy. Thus, if you have chronically high insulin, you cannot burn your own body fat!

The key to losing weight easily and without hunger is to keep your body in a “burn fat” mode by keeping your blood sugar level stable and your insulin level low and stable. This can be achieved by eating protein-containing breakfasts and small between-meal snacks and by keeping carbohydrate intake at a sensible level with most of the carbohydrates low to moderate on the glycemic index (GI). (Low to moderate GI carbohydrates do not promote dramatic swings in blood sugar and insulin levels. Carbohydrates should be eaten with protein. Adrenal hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline also affect our weight. When adrenaline (epinephrine) is secreted in response to stress, the body releases stored fuel (glucose) from the liver into the bloodstream. Insulin is secreted to drive this glucose into your cells to be used for energy. If you have to run away from a wild animal, you will use that glucose to give you the energy for running. However, if your stress does not involve physical activity, the glucose may be stored as fat. This is the chemical explanation of why it is nearly impossible for some people to lose or even maintain their weight during stressful times, regardless of their food intake.

High levels of cortisol, which is secreted with adrenaline in response to stress, direct your cells to stop taking sugar from the blood. The resulting high blood sugar levels promote the release of more insulin which, by its action on the enzymes mentioned above, can lead to the storage of fat. This is another mechanism by which stress causes weight gain. Even if you don’t succumb to comfort foods when you are stressed, this is why you may gain weight at stressful times in spite of healthy eating. In addition, some people are genetically predisposed towards secreting excess cortisol, and if overweight, they will usually have an apple-shaped body. Surprisingly, exercise that is prolonged, too strenuous, or done without food, also causes the release of adrenal hormones and thus interferes with weight loss. Moderate exercise, such as walking, gardening, cleaning house, or leisurely bicycling or swimming, is best for weight loss because it allows your body to stay in the “burn fat” mode, and thus body fat will be burned while you are exercising. A final hormone that influences weight is leptin, the master hormone for long-term weight control. In an optimally healthy person, the body’s fat regulates itself. When weight is gained, the fat produces leptin which suppresses appetite and increases resting metabolic rate, thus causing automatic weight loss. Overweight people have abundant leptin being produced by their body fat, but their body does not respond to it. According to Leo Galland, MD, this insensitivity of the body’s cells to the signals of the leptin, or leptin resistance, is caused by inflammation and anti-inflammatory substances our bodies make in response to inflammation. Leptin resistance may be the reason that maintaining weight loss is sometimes so difficult. Very low carbohydrate diets and the yo-yo dieting that tends to occur with attempts to lose weight by counting calories have both been found to increase leptin resistance.

Leptin function can be improved by decreasing inflammation. This can be accomplished by avoiding allergic foods, eating anti-inflammatory foods, keeping insulin levels low and stable, and reaching a healthy weight, which will allow leptin to function well and result in a healthy permanent weight. Hormones rule when it comes to weight loss! To keep your weight at a stable healthy level in mid-life or lose weigh successfully and permanently, discard all the faulty assumptions you’ve heard about weight in the past, and embrace the pursuit of real health and hormonal control by understanding how to work with your body. You will be amazed at how easy weight loss or maintenance of a healthy weight can be.

Individuals with food allergies face additional weight-loss challenges such as inflammation due to allergies which can lead to our master weight control hormone, leptin, being unable to do its job of maintaining a healthy weight. Those with gluten intolerance often eat a diet too high rice. Rice is the only grain which is high on the glycemic index in its whole grain form; thus eating too much of it will raise insulin levels and cause the body to deposit fat. Although the recipes in this book were developed for those on special diets, non-sensitive people will enjoy them as well, and the weight loss principles in this book will help anyone lose weight. (A chapter of recipes made with wheat and other problematic foods is included for those on unrestricted diets).

The most frustrating deficiency of conventional weight loss diets is that they don’t work long-term. Low-calorie, low-fat diets can lead to loss of muscle mass, and with less muscle to burn calories, this type of diet effectively reduces metabolic rate so we need less food. Rare is the person who loses weight by counting calories and keeps it off after they liberalize their diet! However, continual dieting for the rest of your life is not the way you need to live, and you do not have to be deprived of pleasure in order to lose weight.

Overweight is not due to a lack of willpower. Rather, it is due to a chemical imbalance in our bodies. Once we begin to correct that imbalance by applying the principles in Food Allergy and Gluten-Free Weight Loss, we can lose weight without hunger or deprivation and can maintain a healthy weight permanently and easily by regaining normal self-regulating hormonal control of our weight.

Nicole Seitz's sensitive and creative storytelling style draws the readers right into the story, and it keeps you entralled to the very end. She weaves the stories of Ally, Vesey, and Sunali together to create a fine tapestry of a tale that will resonant with women, especially mothers.

This is a thoughtful and beautiful novel, meant to be savored and mulled over. I feel privileged to have read it and I highly recommend it.

I loved Mary Jane Clark's first book in this series, "To Have And To Kill," and I was delighted to find the same sense of fun and adventure in her second book, "The Look of Love."

I really enjoy the characters in this series, and find the main character, Piper, to be quite the little spitfire who truly does know her way around a pastry bag, even if she doesn't quite have the experience to be more confident. I used to decorate cakes, and I was so pleased to find that Mary Jane includes the right methods and techniques in her story that cake decorating requires!

This is a fun series, and I look forward to the next installment!

One of the best perks of being a book reviewer is getting to know, and in some instances, becoming friends with the authors of the books you read.

I've been privileged to know, and count among my friends, the wonderful romance/suspense/young adult author Sharon Sala. I first met Sharon at a Red River Romance Writers meeting in Wichita Falls in the late 1990s, and have kept up with her career ever since then. (We "Sharons" have to stick together!)

When one critic called "The Crown" a great mix between Phillipa Gregory and Dan Brown, they had the description exactly right. I throughly enjoyed the fast-paced adventures, and more than a little sad to see the story come to an end. Perhaps a sequel might be in the future, one would hope?
I highly recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys historical fiction with a goodly amount of twists and turns to keep it lively!

Nancy Bilyeau has worked on the staffs of Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, and Good Housekeeping. Most recently, she served as deputy editor at InStyle magazine. Book Review - Forbidden by Syrie and Ryan M. James

I was so incredibly impressed with this novel! Syrie and Ryan James have accomplished the nearly impossible feat of writing about teenagers without being too sexually explicit while keeping the story lively, interesting, and fast-moving! Being the mother of four sons, I know teenage hormones rage at that age, but the James' story manages to convey the sense of longing and affection the two main characters have for each other without having to paint a graphic picture! Well Done!!!

With "angel" stories becoming more and more popular these days, I was intrigued to see how the plot would be played out in this novel, and the background and storytelling held my attention throughout the story.

I highly recommend this book, and I hope that this is the beginning of what promises to be a much-anticipated series!

One of my absolute all-time favorite movies is "Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory." I absolutely love the fantasy and magic and, of course, all the candy that make this movie a perfect dream!

Now, I have read many, many memoirs, biographies and autobiographies of actors and actresses, but I have to say, I was absolutely AMAZED at how wonderful this book is! Filled with ancedotes and photographs, Julie Dawn Cole details her life as a young child actress who was tapped to take part in a movie role that would change her life!

Julie details her experiences in such a lively and fun manner that you almost feel as if you are right there with her as she steps into the wonderful world of Wonkaland. Her descriptions - of seeing the captivating Chocolate Room for the first time, complete with the chocolate waterfall and river, the orange-faced little men who play the Oompa-Loompas, and all that imaginative wonderful candy trees and flowers; of working with Gene Wilder (who played Willy Wonka) and the rest of the children; of the fantastical and scary boat that sailed the "chocolate" river; and how the movie has affected the rest of her life - are some of the most vivid and well-written memories I have had the pleasure of reading.

Julie Dawn Cole - then and now!

Making the book a complete delight is the inclusion of the many, many photographs that Julie took during the making of the film. She also includes letters that she wrote to her mother and sister, who had to stay in England while Julie was off making the film, and you can read how excited and sometimes overwhelmed the little 12-year old girl was as she made movie history.

This is truly a one-of-a-kind book and I highly recommend it!

Book Review - The Rocky Road to Romance by Janet Evanovich

Way back before there was ever a Stephanie Plum, author Janet Evanovich was known for her lively and fun romance novels - yes, Romance!

Now, these charming books are being re-released for a whole new generation of readers to enjoy!

I was thoroughly enchanted with this short, but cute story! You can see glimpses of Janet Evanovich's writing magic as far as suspense and mystery goes in the intrigue that dances through this story. Her characters are full of fun, and the secondary characters are just as much of a delight to meet. The storyline is fast-paced and full of action, and I was sorry to see it come to it's satifying ending - I wanted it to go on for a while longer!

I'll admit I haven't read any of Janet's "Stephanie Plum" books, but maybe I need to check them out now! I'm only what - 18 behind!! Until I get around to those, I'm looking forward to future releases of Janet's romances which are planned for the future!

Book Review - Moonlight In The Morning by Jude Deveraux

Yes, I'm on a series kick! What can I say when all my favorite authors have new books in their series out at the same time! Let it be known I've been in book heaven!

Jude Deveraux's "Edilean" series is a great favorite of mine, and I'm proud and awe-struck that one of my quotes from a previous reviews appears on the covers of her latest books.

Jude continues the story of the little town of Edilean, Virigina and it's residents with "Moonlight In The Morning," and it's a wonderful tale!

These young and lively ladies, who are all blessed with artistic talent, are very personable and fun to get to know - and the gentlemen who are attracted to them are sure to be just as personable, as well as kind, loving, handsome ... well, you get the picture!

I love how Jude Deveraux keeps the continuity of the original storyline flowing throughtout all her books, and settling down to read any book in this series is just like visiting with old friends on the front porch with a icy glass of tea. But, if this is your first trip to Edilean, you can still pick up on the specialness of this series with no problem at all - and I guarantee, you'll find yourself searching out the previous books!

I highly recommend this book!

Book Review - Hidden Summit: A Virgin River Novel by Robyn Carr

I enjoy romance series, and one of my new favorites is Robyn Carr's Virgin River series. (I know, I know, I'm late to the party - but I'm catching up!)

Set in the mountains of California, this series features honorable men and women who are loyal and loving and happy.

The latest book in the series is "Hidden Summit," and it's a winner!

Sick of running into her cheery ex-husband and his new wife, Leslie Petruso accepts a job at the Virgin River branch of Haggerty Construction and takes the high road right out of town. Now she's got Paul Haggerty's business running like a well-oiled machine. In fact, things are so busy Paul jumps at the chance to hire an extra set of hands.

Just like Leslie, Conner Danson has been burned by love. But if Leslie was disappointed by her relationship going bad, Conner was decimated. He's got no time for womenalthough he spends an awful lot of time pretending not to notice Leslie. And she's pretty busy "ignoring" the chemistry between them.

This story has a lot of suspense and action, and literally kept me up all night reading - I had to find out what happened to Connor and Leslie in the end.

I really enjoy the way Robyn Carr brings in characters who have been featured in previous novels, and keeps the continuity flowing throughout the entire series. The tight-knit community of Virgin River seems to be an idyllic place to live, but there is always a lot of lively action taking place that make it exciting as well.

I'm a big fan of Emily March's Eternity Springs series, and was thrilled when her latest book, "Lover's Leap," came out recently!

This installment of the story was a little more intense than some of the others, mainly because the focus was on Sarah Reese and Cam Murphy's secrets and how they ended up affecting more people than they imagined.

Emily March has done a wonderful job weaving this story into the tapestry that is Eternity Springs, bringing another layer to the stories, and leaving the readers anxious to know more and more.

I enjoyed the fiesty characters of Valerie Allen, the widow with the unfortunate past that makes her seem to be cursed, and Brody Monroe, the Union solider-turned cowboy who takes a chance on Valerie and finds the love of his life - if he can just survive long enough to enjoy it.

Linda's contribution to this collection is entitled "Cupid's Arrow," and is a story of how misunderstandings and miscommunications almost cost Rue Ann Spencer and her former beau Logan Cutter a chance at finding true happiness with each other. Linda's talent for writing witty, snappy dialouge and endearing storylines is clearly evident in this tale, and I absolutely fell in love with her charming and mischievous Barlow Sisters, the unexpected driving force behind reuniting the two lovers! I'd love to see more stories featuring these two lively ladies!

"Loving Miss Laurel," Phyliss Miranda's story, finds a determined young lady facing her former love when it comes to whether the town of Farley Springs gets their roads paved in anticipation of the railroad coming, or a new library. Laurel Dean Womack, recently back from her schooling back East, finds herself pitted against saloon owner Hunter Campbell and during their battles they soon find that there is still a passion between them just waiting to be ignited. I loved the fiesty characters in this tale, and enjoyed the historical facts sprinkled into the story as well.

And last, but certainly not least, is DeWanna Pace's tale, "Sweet Talk." Handsome Dr. Noah Powell is a busy man as the doctor in Longhorn City, and while he is much sought-after by the ladies in town, he prefers to lavish his attention on his lovebird, Amigo, during what little spare time he has. But he soon finds his affections being turned in the unlikely direction of the lovely JoEmma Brown. Wheelchair bound after a bought of scarlet fever, JoEmma is an unusual girl who would rather spend time with her plants and her own peach-faced lovebird Gabby, but she has always felt an attraction to Noah, but would prefer not to battle her sister Angelina for his attention. However, when Gabby flies the coop and is found cozied up to Noah's Amigo, the two humans are drawn together by their birds' new "relationship" and find there is a spark between them that is just waiting to be fanned into a romantic flame. I truly enjoyed DeWanna's gentle characterization of JoEmma and the dignity she granted the character. She showed how JoEmma handled her situation being confined to a wheelchair with dignity and grace. Many kudos for this portrayal.

"Be My Texas Valentine" is like a lovely box of chocolates - there are treats galore just waiting to be savored by romance fans! I highly recommend this book!

I really enjoy reading about the lives of Queens - who knows, maybe I was royalty in a previous life - and I find that I'm really looking forward to this upcoming book about a pair of sisters who were historically relevant in their queenly roles.

This would be a great cookbook to give first-time homeowners, brides and grooms, recent college grads, or actually anyone who loves to bake! The recipes are simple and well-written, and the photographs are fun and inspiring! I highly recommend this charming book!!

INGREDIENTS

4 tablespoons butter, divided
1 package (10 ounces) miniature marshmallows (about 6 cups)
6 cups crispy rice cereal
1/4 teaspoon McCormick® Pure Peppermint Extract
1/3 cup white chocolate chips
3 candy canes, coarsely crushed, divided (about 1/4 cup)

DIRECTIONS

1. Grease 8- or 9-inch square pan with 1 tablespoon of the butter. Set aside. Melt remaining 3 tablespoons butter in large saucepan or Dutch oven on low heat. Add marshmallows; stir constantly until marshmallows are melted. Remove from heat. Add peppermint extract; mix well. Add rice cereal, chocolate chips and 2 1/2 tablespoons of the crushed candy canes; stir until well blended.

2. Press into prepared pan using a buttered spatula. Sprinkle top with remaining 1 1/2 tablespoons crushed candy canes. Cool 15 minutes. Cut into 25 squares. Remove squares from pan. Cut each square in half crosswise.

How to Crush Candy Canes: Place candy canes in large resealable plastic bag. Close bag tightly. Pound with rolling pin, mallet or heavy skillet until coarsely crushed.

(Sharon's Tip: You can get candy canes cheap now too since the Christmas stuff is on clearance!! They freeze good too!)

Wouldn't these be cute cut out with a heart-shaped cookie cutter and packaged up with red ribbon! Enjoy!!

I always enjoyed reading fairy tales as a little girl, and have been delighted with Eloisa James' "retelling" of some of my favorites. "The Duke Is Mine" is a lively, fast paced, and deliciously wicked at times romp that features a headstrong, witty heroine, a handsome and brooding hero, and a cast of characters that keep the tale enticing! Fans of Regency-era romances will adore this offering!

In a year that brought about a bevy of wonderful and exciting books, sitting down to pick just a few as my favorites has got to be one of the hardest things I've done lately!

I enjoy, and daresay, Love nearly every book I read. If I don't love it or even like it, I don't bother to read it. Wierd, I know - but that's my philosophy!

So it was really hard to pick just 5, 10 or even 15 - soooo ...

I'll be posting my top 10 Romance picks on Monday; my top 10 Cozy Mystery picks on Tuesday; and finally my top 10 Non-Fiction picks on Wednesday - who says you can't draw out a good thing! :)

So, that being said, here is my choices for what I considered to be the best TWENTY books that I had the pleasure of reading in 2011 - in the fiction category!

Christmas Book Reviews - Last Minute Holiday recommendations!

Well, the big day is almost here, and as usual, I'm waaayyy behind in everything! But I wanted to share these last minute holiday reads that have tickled my reading fancy this month! (Plus, nobody ever said you can't read a good Christmas story after Christmas, did they?)

First up - the always lovely, always looked-forward-to Christmas offering from Debbie Macomber.

This year, instead of her usual Christmas angel stories, Debbie wraps up her Cedar Cove series with "1225 Christmas Tree Lane." And it is a wonderful story, that not only highlights one last new family, but always brings closure to the rest of the residents of Cedar Cove. I'm sorry to see this series ending, but look forward to what Debbie will have to offer in the future!

Next - a lovely anthology from Fern Michaels, Elizabeth Bass, Rosalind Noonan, and Nan Rossiter.

Four holiday tales that are guaranteed to brighten your day! And the best part - you can sit down and read these short stories during your breaks in cooking, wrapping, cleaning ... well, you get the idea!

My husband introduced me to the writings of William W. Johnstone and J.A. Johnstone, and I'm so glad he did. Although "A Lone Star Christmas" brings in several characters from previous books, I was easily able to catch onto the many different characters and their relationships to one another in this story. Full of drama, suspense, and even romance, I absolutely loved this tale of the old West, and will be looking forward to reading more of the Johnstone family's work in the future!

Christmas Book Review - A Christmas Homecoming by Anne Perry

Today's holiday reading selection is an interesting period history from acclaimed mystery author Anne Perry.

This was a different Christmas story. While it is set during the Christmas season, there is no celebrating going on in this tale. If you are familiar with Anne Perry's characters from her Charlotte and Thomas Pitt novels, you will find the story of Charlotte's mother Caroline very interesting. But if you haven't read any of the previous Christmas novels or Pitt novels, then you might be at a bit of a loss as to who's who, and what is going on.

I thought the story of the theatrical cast gathering for a trial run of a play based on Bram Stoker's "Dracula" novel to be fascinating, and the mystery that is connected to the story is stirring and intriguing. But as far as being a Christmas story that "lifts the spirits and rejoices the heart" (as is described in the above description) - well, not so much. But, to each his or her own. Fans of Perry's work will love this short, but interesting continuation of the characters she is so well known for.

Christmas Book Reviews - Three for One Special!

Well, I got a bit behind in posting my Christmas Book Reviews, so today, you get a special "Three for One" deal! :)

First up - "Comfort and Joy" by India Knight.

"Comfort and Joy" is an absolute joy to read! In a story that is spread out over three holiday seasons, the reader is brought right into Clara's family celebrations with her entire extended family, which includes two ex-husbands, three children, her family, their families and a host of friends. Clara struggles to give her bunch the "perfect" Christmas experience, but it isn't until the very end that she finally realizes that Christmas is made when her family and friends are together, no matter where the holiday is celebrated. Full of quirky English humor, this story is a lot of fun! I loved this book, and Highly Recommend it!

Next up - A Piggly Wiggly Christmas by Robert Dalby.

This was a very enjoyable holiday read, but if you haven't read the previous three books (Waltzing At The Piggly Wiggly, Kissing Babies At The Piggly Wiggly, and A Piggly Wiggly Wedding) you are going to be a little lost at first. Keeping that in mind, this is a good, old-fashioned Southern charmer of a story. Lots of humor and lots of heart-warming moments.

And last, but not least - "An O'Brien Family Christmas" by Sherryl Woods.

Dating Matthew O’Brien-a playboy and a younger man-cost Laila Riley her career and her parents’ respect. A high price, even for love-and when Laila decides it was just a fling, she breaks it off, despite Matthew’s objections.

I love Sherryl Woods' "Chesapeake Shores" series, and this novel continues the story of the lively O'Brien clan and their love lives. Woods takes the family to Dublin, Ireland in this tale, where the matriarch Nell reunites with an old flame, while her grandson Matthew tries his best to win back his girl Laila in time for a Christmas wedding.

It helps to know a lot of the back-story of this series, but readers who are new to the stories can still pick up what is going on with who, what, when and where easily.

One of my fondest wishes is to visit Ireland one day, but until then, a trip with the O'Briens at Christmas time is almost as good!

Christmas Book Review - Christmas In Sugarcreek by Shelley Shepard Gray

There have been a lot of wonderful Amish-themed Christmas books out this year, and one I particularly enjoyed is "Christmas in Sugarcreek" by Shelley Shepard Gray.

This is a very sweet story that encompasses the love of family, the love of faith, and a good bit of gentle romance as well. I enjoyed how Shelley Gray brings out the struggle that her main characters have with their feelings for each other, and how they consider their families and community as they quietly fall in love with each other.

This is the fourth book in Shelley's "Sugarcreek" series, but it can be read as a stand alone novel on its own. I plan to go back and pick up on the previous three books to visit the families of Sugarcreek once again!

I highly recommend this one!

I was so pleasantly surprised by this book, for many reasons.

First of all - the setting is in my adopted home state of Alabama, and the author used many of my favorite places throughout the story - including Homewood, Helena, and Tuscaloosa. It was a delight to recognize the area.

Second, and probably most importantly, this is a well-written story! Part romance, part suspense, Julie Ford takes her readers on a fast-paced, exciting tale that is thrilling, touching, and just a tiny bit naughty! Her characters are personable and charismatic, even the bad guys and the family dynamics that are represented throughout the story are realistic and lively.

Although the title suggests that this story is a Christmas-themed book, I would highly recommend it for reading anytime of the year!

Weekend Cooking and Christmas Book Review - Debbie Macomber's Christmas Cookbook

I'm a big Debbie Macomber fan, and I was so thrilled to be able to review a copy of her new cookbook, "Debbie Macomber's Christmas Cookbook."

This "coffee-table" sized book is filled with delicious recipes, stories from Debbie about how some of the recipes orginated, decorating ideas and gift ideas! And the photographs that accompany many of the recipes are just awe-inspiring! It's the perfect "one-stop" book for the holidays!

If you are looking for a cookbook to get you in the holiday mood - this is it!

Here is a fun recipe from the book that would make a welcomed gift for the holidays or anytime the weather calls for a good soup day!

Many Bean Soup Mix

( From Debbie Macomber's Christmas Cookbook)

Ingredients:

1/2 cup dried yellow split peas
1/3 cup dried green split peas
1/3 cup dried red lentils
1/4 cup instant minced onions
1/3 cup dried green beans
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Layer all ingredients in order listed into a 1 pint glass jar. Store tightly covered at room temperature for up to 2 months.

How to Make Soup:

1 tablespoon olive oil
2 carrots, peeled and sliced
2 celery stalks, thinly sliced
salt and black pepper to taste
1 meaty ham hock (or 1 cup of chopped ham)
8 cups reduced sodium chicken broth

Warm oil in medium heavy saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add carrots and celery; season with salt and pepper. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring. Add ham, Many Bean Soup Mix, and broth. Bring to boil. Reduce heat, bring to simmer.

Cover and simmer for 2 hours or until beans are tender, stirring occasionally.

Remove ham hock from soup, and slice meat from bone, cutting into small pieces. Return ham pieces to soup, cook until warmed through.

This would make a fabulous gift for the neighbors, the postman, teachers, and anyone who loves a good, hearty soup!

I've always been fascinated with the Amish way of life, and this year there are several great Christmas books out that feature Amish and Mennonite story lines.

I'd like to know how everyone gets along after this story is over.

I particularly enjoyed reading about the "Diamond Lils," the lively and fiesty group of poker-playing ladies who keep their fingers on the pulse of the neighborhood. I'd love to play a hand or two of Texas Hold 'Em with these gals!

I highly recommend this book for your holiday reading!

I'm proud to be an Irish gal, and I love finding Irish authors to recommend! I think Cecelia Ahern is remarkable writer who incorporate a lot of fun and magic into her stories - so I was delighted to find her holiday book, "The Gift."

Lou Suffern is practised in the art of concealment. He is, also, always overstretched, trying to do too many things at once. His overburdened schedule gives him few moments of peace, even in his sleep. And when he spends time at home with his wife and family, he is always distracted, and, mentally, somewhere else.

On a cold winter morning, Lou is on his way to work when he encounters Gabe, a homeless street dweller, sitting outside an office building. Lou is intrigued by him, and contrives to get him a job in the post room. Weekend Cooking - Gooseberry Patch Quick and Easy Christmas

Now that the holiday season is in full swing, there is less time than ever to fix anything to eat (at least around my house, that it is!)

To the rescue comes the Gooseberry Patch folks with their latest book, "Quick and Easy Christmas."

This spiral-bound cookbook is full of over 220 recipes from cooks from all over the country that are great for the holidays, or any other time that you need something quick and easy to fix. Plus they have added tips and ideas on holiday decorations, crafts, and gift ideas as well.

Divided into six sections (Breakfast and Brunch, Snacks and Appetizers, Soups, Sides and Salads, Mains, Desserts and Slow Cooker), it is easy to find something yummy and fast to satisfy the entire family.

Here is one recipe I intend to try this Christmas -

EggNog Cake

18-1/4 oz. pkg. yellow cake mix with pudding
3 eggs, beaten
1/3 c. oil
1 t. nutmeg
1-1/3 c. eggnog

In a large bowl, blend together all ingredients until smooth. Pour into a Bundt® pan that has been sprayed with non-stick vegetable spray. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 to 55 minutes, until a cake tester comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack 10 minutes. Transfer to a nice plate. Drizzle Eggnog Glaze over cake. Makes 12 servings.

Eggnog Glaze:
2 c. powdered sugar
2 T. margarine, softened
1 t. vanilla extract
3 to 4 T. eggnog

In a medium bowl, combine all ingredients except eggnog. Add enough eggnog to reach a glaze consistency.

Christmas Book Review: Christmas Treasures: A Cape Light novel by Thomas Kinkade and Katherine Spencer

I love Thomas Kinkade and Katherine Spencer's Cape Light series - there is just something about that small town way of life that these authors portray that just touches my heart, and I particularly enjoy the Christmas-themed tales that have become an annual tradition for this collection.

This year's offering is just delightful and heartwarming!

If you have never read one of these books, do yourself a favor and check out "Christmas Treasures." I highly recommend it for your holiday reading!

Christmas Book Review - The Christmas Wedding by James Patterson and Richard DiLallo

I'll be honest - I haven't read much James Patterson, and I wasn't too sure what to expect from a holiday story written by two men - I mean, Christmas and love and weddings are really the area of women's expertise (I know, sexist of me!).

But I was delightfully surprised at how good this little novel is! It's a fast read, but the characters are complex and interesting, and you are just fascinated with the entire Summerhill clan almost at once. I enjoyed how Patterson gave each of Gaby's adult children a chance to share their stories, all while revolving around their mother's deliciously mysterious surprise of a Christmas wedding!

I highly highly recommend this novel for your holiday reading! I read it in about two hours, but would gladly go back and savor it once again - it's that good!
